Volunteer FAQ

How old do I have to be to volunteer at Hospitality House?

We have volunteer opportunities for any age. Volunteers under 14 must be accompanied by an adult.

How should I dress to volunteer?

Dress is casual. If working with clients shopping for food, warehouse, food drives or food deliveries, please dress for warehouse work with closed toe shoes.

What if I have a group who wants to volunteer?

Please email info@hhfp.org to schedule a day/time.

Do I have to register to volunteer?

Yes!  Please call the pantry to obtain additional information.  Or feel free to come into the pantry during normal business hours to complete an application. Sorry the application is not available online. :-(

What are the steps to becoming a volunteer?

Step 1: Complete a paper application by coming to the pantry.  (Sorry we do not have online applications)  Please do not seek to complete the application the day of training as it would require us to delay training and negatively impact others to accommodate you. Pantry hours are Mondays (Noon- 7pm), Thursdays (10am - 2pm) and Saturdays (11am - 2pm) and applications can be picked up and or completed during these times.  Please bring your completed applications to the training.

Step 2: Come to the pantry to complete your pantry orientation and training. Trainings take place only on Saturdays at 10am and lasts for 1.5 hours.  (Call the pantry to see when the next training session is!)  If training is canceled for some reason it will be posted on our Facebook page and or our website so check before you come!

Step 3: Start volunteering!

What type of volunteer opportunities exist at the pantry?

There are several categories of volunteer opportunities

Board membership: Responsible for the overall direction and governance of the agency. Board members work to assure the long term viability of the organization. Board membership positions are limited in availability so please submit a resume and your interest to info@hhfp.org and someone will get back to you.

Shopper: Our most common and numerous type of volunteer opportunity where you escort our wonderful clients through the pantry as they shop!  Suitable for high school aged minors, adults, and groups!

Warehouse staff volunteer: Stocking shelves, unloading food from delivery trucks and cars. These positions are less numerous but nevertheless are great opportunities for young children or groups to help out when the volume of work exceeds our normal capacities. Needs of the warehouse vary, so call first to find out if this is something we can accommodate!

Administrative Staff volunteer: Do you like to serve as a receptionist?  Interested in data entry and book keeping?  Then these opportunities might be right for you.  These roles are for adults only

Event based volunteer: These are typically annual activities that the pantry sponsors where we could use a helping hand.  Events include but are not limited to our annual Golf Outing, Santa Shop, Back Pack Program, etc. call the pantry, check out a call for need on our website and or Facebook page or email us at info@hhfp.org if this might interest you!

Employee/Group volunteering

Typically this will be for corporate organziations who are looking to have their staff come in.  If your group is larger than 10 persons we suggest that you reserve several days to accomdoate all of your employees as we typically can't provide work for more than 10 persons at one time.  Groups typically will do shopping or warehouse/facility related work.  The group coordiantor should call the pantry to reserve a date and time, and have their staff compelte the online civil rights training

When can I volunteer?

The type of volunteer opportunity you work in would determine when you could volunteer.

Because our shopper is our most ample volunteer opportunity most people volunteer during some segment of our normal business hours. (Mon: Noon - 7pm, Thurs: 10am - 2pm, Sat: 11am - 2pm)

Volunteers choose how frequently and how many hours they like to work within the prescribed business hours of the pantry; under most circumstances.

Can I complete my community service here?

Yes, however please keep in mind that while HHFP is "felony friendly" we cannot provide community service hours for those who have been adjudicated for criminal sexual conduct.  Please note that we reserve the right to run background checks on all volunteers.
